'My hiking group of six had a precipice trail section to walk, one boot
width wide above 75mile canyon, a sheer slot canyon below with a slight
talus slope. Focused we proceed. I followed my surefooted son. The trail
traverses back for a mile and then descends down into the bottom of 75
mile. We walked down the rocky side canyon floor glowing in desert
colors. We rejoin the river at Neville’s Rapid. Above the green and white
water, an incredible layering of rock is angling up…seeming to grow out of
the river. I look up stream. I look down stream. I take an extremely
wide-angle photo. I’ll want to paint this someday. No time linger - we have
Papago Wall and Slide to navigate. Just beyond, our final campsite at
Hance Rapid, 2 miles down-river.' artist statement by Betsy Menand
